What we do
Financial help
Developing a young person’s musical ability requires considerable investment:
hours dedicated to practice, travel to be taught by the best available teachers,
specialised courses to expand musical horizons and build on skills,
and the purchase or loan of high quality instruments. All these cost a great deal of money.
In families where income is limited, it is often impossible to find the funds
to support these expenses. This is where AYM aims to help. By fundraising from
a wide range of sources, we run an annual Awards programme, whereby £50,000
is distributed to the most talented young musicians in the greatest financial need.
Advice and guidance
As young musicians develop, questions will often arise concerning, for example,
other sources of funding, information on the most appropriate teachers, on courses
or on how to go about buying a new instrument.
It’s often difficult to find the best organisation to contact
for any particular question and, just as importantly, the best person within that
organisation to handle the question. Our Pathways programme provides a
straightforward point of access for musically talented young people who need
guidance on how to develop their talent.
Our partners
AYM works in close collaboration with a diversity of partners across music education. For example we are a signatory to the Music Manifesto and have strong links with many local authority music services, all the specialist music schools and centres for advanced training, young people’s orchestras, music courses and gifted and talented networks, plus many colleagues within contemporary music, jazz and community and youth music. Our Business Plan for 2008 to 2010 will involve a number of sustained initiatives with our partners, ensuring that our work in supporting young musicians has the greatest possible impact.
