Awards for Young Musicians

Giving talent a chance

Events

Over the past few years we have created both quirky- and  traditional-style events, helping aspiring musicians develop their skills; they also learn what it’s like to perform for a range of different audiences, in some quite challenging environments.  At the same time we bring attention to our work, continue to develop wider support and create new  opportunities for our Award winners to stretch themselves.

Southwell Music Festival soloists in concert with AYM Award winners at Southwell Minster, Nottinghamshire

This concert is the exciting culmination of an inaugural partnership project between Awards for Young Musicians and Southwell Music Festival, a renowned annual classical music festival based in the heart of Nottinghamshire. Three East Midlands based exceptionally talented young musicians, supported through our annual Awards Programme, are taking part in masterclasses and being mentored by three festival soloists. Jamie Campbell (the Festival’s Associate Artistic Director), Libby Burgess and Nathaniel Boyd will work with the young musicians throughout the day on solo repertoire, and coach them as an ensemble playing music for piano trio, all to be performed in the evening’s concert. Libby, Jamie and Nathaniel will also perform the celebrated Mendelssohn Piano Trio in D Minor. Audience members are welcome to watch the open coaching sessions between 2.00 pm am 4.00 pm in the State Chamber of the Archbishop’s Palace (free admission).

Jamie Campbell – Violin, Nathaniel Boyd  – Cello, Libby Burgess – Piano plus AYM Award winners Hing Tim Fung – Violin, Katharine Ley – Cello and Annie McChrystal – Piano

“I am excited and proud that the Festival is able to support the vital work of AYM. Since its inception the Festival has sought to provide performance opportunities for young musicians and this is a wonderful addition to our programme of events.” Marcus Farnsworth, Festival Director

Brilliante Concert – Fundraising event at Goldsmiths' Hall, London

Our biggest fundraising event of the year: young people, including Jess Gillam (BBC Young Musician 2016 finalist) will perform in this magnificent livery hall, in the heart of the City of London.  To express your interest in attending please email [email protected].

The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths has been based at this location since 1339, the present building being their third hall on the site.
The second hall was built circa 1634-36 and restored after the Great Fire of London in 1666; it was eventually demolished in the late 1820s. The third and present Hall (1835) is entirely detached, occupies a complete block and is the second largest livery hall in London. In 1941 a bomb exploded in its southwest corner but, amazingly, the building largely survived and was restored after World War II.

Intermezzo at Lunchtime concerts, NNLS, Finchley, London

Intermezzo’s vision is to provide quality concerts for the widest possible audience demographic, while offering a performance platform to talented, emerging young musicians.

On this occasion Jonathan (15) played the Handel Oboe Concert #3, probably composed in 1703 when Handel was just 18. This was followed by Henry (16), who had travelled from Bristol especially for the occasion. He gave an interesting and informed introduction to the Beethoven Sonata #26 “Les Adieux”. Henry is working towards his piano Diploma and is also studying the violin and organ as well as composing. He recently passed his Grade 8 violin with distinction!

This short concert finished with a performance by Isabella (14), Cello, accompanied by Debbie Shah, playing ‘The Swan’ by Camille Saint-Saëns and ‘Scherzo’ by Frank Bridge.
