Awards for Young Musicians

Giving talent a chance

The 2015 Des Simmons Award for Guitar goes to…

In 2014, the very first Des Simmons Award for Guitar was granted.  Des Simmons, who died suddenly in 2013, was an exceptional musician as well as an enthusiastic supporter of young musicians. This special Award was initiated by Des’s partner, Sinead Hall, and his daughter Maisie, with the help of fantastic fundraising from his many friends.  It goes to the best young guitarist each year, to help them take the next step in their musical journey, whether that be upgrading their instrument, paying for lessons, or attending a specialist course.

The 2014 Award went to Brandon Brown (now 18) who, after receiving his Award and upgrading his guitar, applied to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston USA. Having been accepted onto the prestigious course, he began his studies in September 2014.  You can read more about Brandon’s story here.

This year the Award went to 13 year old Jack from London, a student of the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music.  Jack was making exceptional progress as a classical guitarist but was being held back by the student model instrument he was playing.  Thanks to the Des Simmons Award Jack has recently been able to purchase his own concert classical guitar.  After trying a few different guitars Jack chose a Pappalardo Classical Guitar S2 in Cedar.

“I won The Des Simmons Award for Guitar and I was thrilled to be able to buy an even better concert classical guitar than I expected. I am deeply grateful to all those who made it possible. Thank you AYM!” Jack

“I am delighted that Jack can play such an outstanding and fine instrument. The difference in quality is amazing and has put a happy smile on Jack’s face.” Jack’s Mother.
