Useful links and resources
At Awards for Young Musicians we understand that when you are a talented young musician – or the parent of a talented young musician - it is difficult to find the funding to support your musical needs. Here are some names and links that may help you. Directories giving details of funding bodies are often expensive, but are usually available from libraries:
Directory of Grant-Making Trusts
Educational Grants Directory
Grants for Individuals in Need
The Youth Funding Guide
The Arts Funding Guide
Complete Fundraising Handbook
and various regional guides, eg: Guide to Northern Trusts
All of the above are published by the Directory for Social Change — 020 7209 5151.
Take It Away
New Arts Council England Loan Scheme
On 2 July 2007 Arts Council England launched their Take it Away scheme aimed at making musical instruments more affordable, particularly for families and for those on lower incomes. The scheme allows individuals to apply for a loan of up to £2,000 for the purchase of any kind of instrument, and pay it back in nine monthly instalments (with a minimum of 10% deposit) completely interest free.
Additionally, and where available, equipment and services such as music stands, amplifiers, sheet music and tuition can also be included within the loan.
Applicants must be over 18, but are welcome to apply on behalf of a younger person. There are three priority groups:
- • People buying an instrument for the first time
- • People buying an instrument for a younger person
- • People on lower than average incomes (£22,500)
The scheme is available through a network of nearly 100 musical instrument retailers. For a list of these retailers visit www.artscouncil.org.uk and follow the links.
