How you can help

AYM is very grateful to the trusts and foundations, companies and individuals who support our work. (See a list here.)

However, we constantly need to supplement our income in order to keep on supporting the young people who come to us for help. Unlike other charitable foundations, we do not receive steady and increasing income from a living benefactor or a percentage of profits from an associated company, which is why your help is so important to us.

If you are passionate about music and about the power of music to transform the lives of all of us, we need your help, so that we can ensure that talented young musicians are not prevented by lack of means from fulfilling their musical potential.

There are a number of ways in which you can support our work, many of which are enhanced by government tax incentives:.

Establish a Named Award

Why not help the UK’s most talented young musicians by setting up an award in your name or that of a loved one?

Here’s a recent example:

The Edith Hemingway Memorial Award

The Edith Hemingway Memorial Award was established in 2007 in memory of Edith Hemingway (1923 - 2006), a talented and enthusiastic amateur singer from Burnley, Lancashire. The award is endowed by her grand-daughter Ria Hopkinson, an amateur pianist and violinist who benefited from similar funding as a student of the Junior School at the Royal Northern College of Music and is also funded by Edith's daughter Mal Dolan and Awards for Young Musicians.

The first Award went to Katie, a 17 year old clarinettist from Lancashire:

"I was delighted when I found out I had been awarded the Edith Hemingway Award... this award has helped greatly in all aspects of my musical training. I can now afford to have weekly music lessons which has really brought me on as a musician. I was really pleased to learn that Edith was a singer as I love singing. I especially enjoy musical theatre and will be taking my Grade 8 Musical Theatre this November. I absolutely love music, it is such a massive part of my life and without this award I would not be able to enjoy developing my skills."

Edith's grand-daughter, Ria Hopkinson says:

"As a family, we're delighted that AYM has helped us to establish an award in Edith's name. She loved to sing and loved young people, so we are especially pleased to see the award go to Katie, a deserving recipient who wants to keep classical music alive for new generations of listeners. Edith would also be thrilled that someone from Preston has won the award, as she lived in Preston during the Second World War when she was employed making Lancaster bombers."

You too could support young musicians like Katie in an immensely valuable way. If you would like to discuss setting up a Named Award please contact Hester Cockcroft on 0117 9049906.

Donations

Using Gift Aid means that for every pound you give, AYM can claim back the tax you have already paid. This increases our income and enables us to expand our work, helping gifted and talented young people in financial need. In addition, any shares donated to the charity will be exempt from capital gains tax. Please email enquiries@a-y-m.org.uk about ways to enhance your donation.

If you would like to make a donation, please download the Donation Form.

Hold a Fundraising Event

If you would like to hold a concert, run a marathon or do something else to help raise funds to support us, please do get in touch. Events held for AYM have included concerts in a Kent school and another in a Gateshead church.

Remember a Charity in Your Will

AYM is a member of the Remember a Charity in your Will campaign.

Giving to charity in a will is tax-free, so we get the maximum benefit; and it can save you Inheritance Tax. It's as easy as adding a codicil to your will, giving the name and number of the charity and, perhaps, index-linking your gift up to a specified amount.

Make AYM the beneficiary of funeral tributes

Many people ask friends and relatives to make a gift to AYM instead of sending flowers at their funeral. This is a very fitting tribute for someone for whom music has been a major part of their life.
